capturing miracles - photographing a home birth
There are moments in life that transcend the ordinary, moments that redefine the very essence of what it means to be human. Photographing a home birth is one of those extraordinary experiences. As a photographer, being invited into such an intimate and sacred space is a profound honour, and one that filled my heart with a sense of awe.
In the lead up to the birth I had been on call waiting to hear from the expectant mother. I got a message in the afternoon to let me know that she was in early labour and she would update me when I needed to head along. We had previously agreed that when the midwife was leaving I would too. I got the call at 6pm!
As I had never photographed a birth before I didnβt know what to expect. But as soon as I walked though the door there was an overwhelming sense of calm. The lighting, the scents, the sounds, the supportive presence of loved ones all created a peaceful and relaxed environment.
As a photographer, your role is to be a silent witness to this miracle, capturing the raw, unfiltered emotions as they unfold. Itβs about finding beauty in the chaos, and serenity in the midst of intensity.
I arrived at their home around 6.30pm and baby arrived just after 9pm.
Below are a few of my favourite images.
